Creating Post Categories
Post categories keep your posts sorted and control where they appear on your website. A category is usually paired with a page, such as a Latest News or Blog page, and every post you write is filed under at least one category.
This guide covers creating a category, choosing its page, nesting categories, and adding a category to a page you already have.
Creating a Category
- Go to Dashboard > Website > Posts.
- Click Categories.
- Click New Category.
- Enter a Category Title, for example Blog or News.
- If the category belongs under another category, select its Parent Category. Leave this as None for a top-level category.
- Choose a Type: Primary Category for organising posts with full-version pages, or Additional Category for an extra grouping such as Favourites.
- Choose a Category Page option. See below for what each one does.
- Click Save Category.
Your new category is available straight away the next time you create a post.
Choosing a Category Page
Category Page sets the page associated with the category. When creating a new full-version page for a post, Oncord uses the page attached to its primary category, or the nearest parent category with a page, to suggest a location.
- Create a New Page - Builds a new page for the category and lists the posts on it. Post pages are created underneath it.
- Use Existing Page - Points the category at a page you already have.
- No Page - Available when the category’s Type is Additional Category. Creates the category without a category page. Posts assigned to it can still have full-version pages through their primary category.
Enabling Comments
Enable Comments appears once you have chosen Create a New Page or Use Existing Page. Tick it to allow visitors to comment on posts in this category.
The option is not available for a category set to No Page, because comments belong to the post's page.
Assigning Categories to a Post
Create the categories you need under Dashboard > Website > Posts > Categories before selecting them on a post.
- Open the post and choose one Primary Category from the dropdown on the Post Editor tab.
- To assign more categories, open Additional Attributes and tick the relevant Additional Categories checkboxes.
- Save the post using the button for its selected link type.
If a category is missing, create it in the Categories area, then reopen the post to select it. Save any post changes before leaving the editor. See Creating Your First Post for the full process.
Adding a Category to an Existing Page
You can also list a category's posts on a page you have already built.
- Open the page in the page editor.
- Click Insert in the left panel.
- Scroll to the Dynamic section and drag the Posts element onto the page.
- Choose which categories the element should show.
- Click Save.
Tips and Notes
- A category title can be changed later without breaking existing posts.
- Changing a category's page moves where its posts are listed, so check your website navigation afterwards.
- To create a new full-version page for a post, its primary category or a parent category needs an associated page.
